Indigenous Engagement
Our Indigenous Engagement team develops and supports opportunities and initiatives that enable young people, Indigenous communities and community partners to have input into the work of our office. Cultivating and strengthening these relationships helps ensure our work is informed, relevant and connected to those we serve. This is particularly important given the overrepresentation of Indigenous young people in Alberta’s child intervention and youth justice systems.
Some of our responsibilities include:
- Facilitating culturally relevant workshops for OCYA staff
- Promoting positive cultural identity through self advocacy training with community partners
- Leading the OCYA in the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and the Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates’ Declaration of Reconciliation
